Auditions

Students may audition for a number of extra singing opportunities. Most auditions take place in the PT Choir room. See below for details on each audition opportunity.

Audition Dates:

  • September 20-22: Olathe District Honor Choir, KMEA Treble Honor Choir, KCDA Middle Level Honor Choir
  • September 26-28: Recording sessions for KMEA and KCDA honor choir auditions
  • January 23-25: PT Advanced Girls Choir for the 2018-19 school year

Olathe District Honor Choir

  • Audition Dates: September 20-22
  • Audition Times: In class.
  • Who can audition: 7th and 8th graders enrolled in choir
  • Fee for selected singers: $20 (covers lunch, transportation, and music)

Mr. Newlin will choose 4 students for each part (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) for a total of 16 students. Selected students will rehearse with Mr. Newlin on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings at 7:00 am from September 28th to November 20th. Rehearsals are required for those selected to be in this group. Students who miss rehearsals may be asked to step down so that an alternate can take his or her place.

This choir will rehearse with other singers across the district during the school day on Monday, November 20th. The choir performs that same evening at Olathe East High School.

Audition Materials: Sing either Alleluia or Dona Nobis by memory and without piano.


KCDA Treble Honor Choir

  • Audition Dates: September 20-22
  • Recording Sessions: September 26-28, 3:15-5:00pm
  • Audition Times: In class; prepared students will be asked to sign up for a recording session.
  • Who can audition: 6th7th, and 8th graders enrolled in choir
  • $5 audition fee (required by KCDA) to submit a student’s recording.

Each recorded audition is sent to the State judges who make the final selection for the choir. Results are posted in mid-November. The cost for each student selected by the state judges to perform in the honor choir is $50  (fee covers cost of the t-shirt, lunch, training CD, and participation). Students who are selected by the judges will attend Wednesday, 7:00 am morning rehearsals with Mr. Newlin from December through February 23.

Selected students will perform at KMEA in Wichita, KS on February 23rd, 2018. Depending on the number of students, parents may need to arrange transportation for their student to and from KMEA.

Audition Materials: Sing Alleluia by memory and without piano. Submit $5 audition fee.

*Students may either audition for KCDA or KMEA, but not both.


KMEA Middle Level Honor Choir

  • Audition Dates: September 20-22
  • Recording Sessions: September 26-28, 3:15-5:00pm
  • Audition Times: In class; prepared students will be asked to sign up for a recording session.

  • $5 audition fee (required by KMEA) to submit a student’s recording.

Advanced Choirs

  • Audition Dates: January 23-25
  • Audition Times: 3:30-5:30pm each day.
  • Who can audition: 6th and 7th graders

Student who participate in this audition are auditioning to be in the following school year’s advanced ensembles.

Students will audition in front of judges who will independently score each singer. Scores will be analyzed, and students will be either be placed in an intermediate choir or an advanced choir. Placement is based on cutoff scores and balance of voices across ensembles.

Placement in a specific advanced ensemble is at the discretion of the director and is determined by choral balance, past performance, adjudication scores, demonstrations of maturity and responsibility in rehearsal and concerts, and musical readiness. The goal is to create the most successful ensembles possible for the following school year.

Audition Materials:

  • Sing Dona Nobis by memory and without piano (Choose your own voice part).
